Of the Flock

Cincinnati, February 1918. A cold snap had settled over the zoo for two days straight. In the pagoda aviary — the same enclosure where a passenger pigeon named Martha had died four years earlier — a single Carolina Parakeet named Incas sat on his perch, alone. His mate of more than three decades, Lady Jane, had died the previous summer. Keepers said he'd gone listless afterward, the kind of quiet that doesn't need much explaining. On the evening of February 21st, he died too. As far as anyone could confirm, he was the last of his kind on Earth.

The last known Carolina Parakeet, Incas, died in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918 — not because no one tried to save the species, but because almost nothing that would have actually worked was ever tried. Zoos and private owners kept parakeets for decades before the species vanished from the wild, yet virtually no coordinated effort existed to breed them, and Incas and Lady Jane themselves never successfully raised a single chick.

What a Flock of Hundreds Looked Like

It's hard to square one bird on a perch with what the species used to be. Nineteenth-century accounts place Carolina Parakeets as far afield as Nebraska and Lake Erie, well outside the swampy Southeast most people associate with them. They traveled in flocks of hundreds, ate the toxic seeds of cocklebur plants without apparent harm, and were loud enough to be heard from a distance long before they came into view. They were the only parrot species native to the eastern United States, there is no modern equivalent to compare them to.

Why Captivity Didn't Save Them

Zoos in Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and as far as Hanover and Frankfurt kept Carolina Parakeets going back to the mid-1800s. What they didn't do was talk to each other. In 1966, Bronx Zoo director William Conway calculated that with basic cooperation between institutions, at least 58 recently extinct bird species — the Carolina Parakeet among them — could plausibly have been saved. Instead, most zoos at the time weren't even organized enough to keep potential breeding pairs together, let alone coordinate across institutions. Incas and Lady Jane repeatedly evicted their own eggs from the nest — a sign, most likely, of poor diet or unsuitable social conditions, neither of which anyone worked seriously to fix.

What the Bird's DNA Later Revealed

The instinct is to assume a slow genetic decline — a species already doomed by inbreeding long before anyone noticed. A 2020 genome study complicated that story. Researchers sequencing Carolina Parakeet DNA found no evidence of a dramatic past demographic decline and no long runs of homozygosity — the genetic signal typically found in already-endangered species. In other words: this wasn't a population that was slowly dying out for generations. The genome suggests the extinction was abrupt, and attributable to direct human causes — hunting, habitat clearing, and capture for the pet trade — rather than a species that never had a chance. The bottleneck that mattered wasn't in the wild population's genes. It was in the tiny, unmanaged captive population left to carry the entire species alone, with no studbook, no shared breeding plan, and no urgency until there was exactly one bird left.

That distinction still shapes conservation today. Modern captive breeding programs exist because of failures like this one, coordinated studbooks, shared genetic management across institutions, population viability planning that starts while a species is still a population, not a single named individual. The lesson wasn't available in time for Incas. It's available now, for whatever species is currently down to its own version of a pagoda aviary.

We think about extinction as something that happens to a species. More often, it happens to a flock, then a pair, then one bird on a cold night with an empty perch beside him. Noticing that difference — while there's still a flock to notice — is the only part of this story that was ever actually in anyone's control.
